Choosing the right paint for your room can be a frustrating process. Here are some easy tips for a successful, and enjoyable, painting experience.
Tip #1: When going to the paint store, bring items from your room as a point of reference. Perhaps bring a few small pillows, fabric swatches, wallpaper or a carpet sample. These will help you get inspired.
Tip #2: Don’t be afraid to take as many paint chips as you need. Select what you believe are appropriate color chips but also grab the ones on either side of your selection. The lighting may affect your color perception at the paint store and the chips could look much different once you get them home.
Tip #3: Once you have your individual color chips, use double stick tape to attach them to the wall. Decide which three you like best and mark them 1 – 2 – 3. Take your the chips back to the store and get paint samples. (Be sure to get your samples in the same grade and finish of paint that you will use on your walls.)
Tip #4: Test the paint. Paint 18” x 18” sample patches on the walls of the room to be painted. Corners are a good location because you can see how the color is affected by light and shadow. Make note of how the colors change from day to night and in natural and artificial light.
After taking these tips into consideration you will be ready to select your color with confidence. Preparation is key in painting. The extra time that this process takes is well worth it in the long run.
Happy painting!
